Subject: Jeff Cash


"When a man dies, a whole world dies."

We are very sad to announce that Jeff Cash, Emeritus Professor at
Imperial College in London, passed away on June 19th. Jeff received
his Mathematics degree from Imperial College, London, in 1969 and then
moved to St. John's College, Cambridge, where he studied for a PhD on
the numerical solution of differential equations under the guidance of
Dr. J.C.P. Miller. Having completed his studies in Cambridge, Jeff
returned to Imperial College as a member of staff in the Mathematics
Department. He was subsequently promoted to reader and then to
Professor in Numerical Analysis. Jeff's research has been mainly
focused on the solution of difference and differential equations, with
an emphasis on mathematical software. In this field, he made
substantial contributions, among which are innovative numerical
methods and codes that have proven to be of great importance. Jeff
will stay in our memory as a cordial, generous, and upright person.
Yet, when living memory of him passes, the methods he created will
continue to serve us all.

The international Series of Online Research Software Events (SORSE)
has opened their call for contributions:

With the cancellation of several international Research Software
Engineering (RSE) community events as a result of the COVID-19
pandemic, RSEs worldwide are facing a lack of opportunities to engage
with their wider community. To address this challenge, SORSE has been
launched by an international committee to provide an opportunity for
RSEs to develop and grow their skills, build new collaborations and
engage with RSEs worldwide. Until we can meet again in person, SORSE
(pronounced "Source"), will bridge the gap and be the source of
interesting and engaging events.

This is an open call to all RSEs and anyone involved with research
software, worldwide, to propose talks, workshops and other types of
online events.

The Call for Contributions form will remain open continuously and
there will be a rolling deadline at the end of the last day (UTC) of
each month, following which all contributions received over the
previous month will be sent for review by the Programme Committee.

seek outstanding candidates with a Ph.D. in operations research,
physics, computer science, applied mathematics or related areas with
research experience in the general area of Quantum Computing (QC). In
addition, demonstrated proficiency in verbal and written communication
skills and the ability to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary
team are required. Some of the research directions that the QCOL is
pursuing are related, but not limited to: the development of new QC
results/techniques to address the solution of combinatorial
optimization problems with NISQ devices, the development of new QC
interior point algorithms, and the study and control of noise in NISQ
devices. Through collaborations, QCOL has access to IBM QC hardware
and software. Compensation will be commensurate with experience, and
the position is for one (1) year with the possibility of extension to

Position 1. The appointees will conduct fundamental research in broad
areas of data- driven modeling, uncertainty quantification, and
machine learning, with a particular focus on multi-fidelity modeling,
generative modeling, transfer learning, deep neural networks, and
