Subject: Software Release, pyMOR 2020.2

The pyMOR development team is happy to announce the release of version
2020.2 of pyMOR (www.pymor.org).

pyMOR is a software library for building model order reduction
applications with the Python programming language. Implemented
algorithms include reduced basis methods for parametric linear and
non-linear problems, as well as system-theoretic methods such as
balanced truncation or IRKA. All algorithms in pyMOR are formulated in
terms of abstract interfaces for seamless integration with external
PDE solver packages. Moreover, pure Python implementations of finite
element and finite volume discretizations using the NumPy/SciPy
scientific computing stack are provided for getting started quickly.

Highlights of this release are:
- Parameter derivatives of solutions and outputs
- Neural network reductor for non-stationary problems
- New tutorials

Subject: New Book, Extrapolation and Rational Approximation

Claude Brezinski, Michela Redivo-Zaglia
Extrapolation and Rational Approximation
The Works of the Main Contributors

Springer Nature, Switzerland, 2020
https://www.springer.com/gp/book/9783030584177

This book paints a fresco of the field of extrapolation and rational
approximation over the last several centuries to the present through
the works of their primary contributors. It can serve as an
introduction to the topics covered, including extrapolation methods,
Pade approximation, orthogonal polynomials, continued fractions,
Lanczos-type methods etc.; it also provides in depth discussion of the
many links between these subjects. A highlight of this book is the
presentation of the human side of the fields discussed via personal
testimonies from twelve contemporary researchers, their anecdotes, and
their exclusive remembrances of some of the "actors." This book shows
how research in this domain started and evolved. Biographies of
eighteen other scholars encountered have also been included. An
important branch of mathematics is described in its historical
context, opening the way to new developments. After a mathematical
introduction, the book contains a precise description of the
mathematical landscape of these fields spanning from the 19th century
to the first part of the 20th. After an analysis of the works
produced after that period (in particular those of Richardson, Aitken,
Shanks, Wynn, and others), the most recent developments and
applications in several domains (theoretical physics, number theory,
computer science and control theory, combinatorics, statistics,
integrable systems, general relativity) are reviewed.

Chapters: 1-General overview; 2-Mathematical background; 3-The
mathematical landscape up to the mid-twentieth century; 4-The life of
Peter Wynn; 5-The works of Peter Wynn; 6-Commentaries and further
developments; 7-Testimonies; 8-Vitae; As a conclusion;
Acknowledgments; Bibliographies; Index

Subject: New Book, Generalized Fractional Calculus

Generalized Fractional Calculus: new advancements and applications
George A. Anastassiou, SPRINGER, HEIDELBERG, NEW YORK, 2021

Computational and fractional analysis play more and more a central
role in now days either by themselves or because they cover a great
variety of applications in the real world. We apply generalized
fractional differentiation techniques of Caputo, Canavati and
Conformable types to a great variety of integral inequalities e.g. of
Ostrowski and Opial types, etc. Some of these are extended to Banach
space valued functions. These inequalities have also great impact in
numerical analysis, stochastics and fractional differential
equations. We continue with generalized fractional approximations by
positive sublinear operators which derive from the presented Korovkin
type inequalities, we include also abstract cases. We present also
multivariate complex Korovkin quantitative approximation theory. It
follows -fractional integral inequalities of Ostrowski and Polya
types. Our results are weighted so they provide a great variety of
cases and applications. The second part of the book deals with the
quantitative fractional Korovkin type approximation of stochastic
processes. We lay there the foundations of stochastic fractional
calculus. We consider both Caputo and Conformable fractional
directions and we derive regular and trigonometric results. Our
positive linear operators can be expectation operator commutative or
not. This book results are expected to find applications in many areas
of pure and applied mathematics and stochastics. As such this
monograph is suitable for researchers, graduate students, and seminars
of the above disciplines, also to be in all science and engineering
libraries.

Experimental biologists are generating data at an unprecedented rate.
Unfortunately, biological insight has not kept pace with this deluge
of data. The goal of my lab is to improve the inference of biological
meaning from the wealth of experimental data collected from single
cells to whole organisms. To do so, we develop sophisticated
statistical and computational tools that enable integrated analyses of
noisy, heterogeneous datasets. More information on the lab can be
found at http://daiglelab.org.

Assistantships are available for students interested in pursuing Ph.D.
research in bioinformatics and/or computational systems
biology. Active research areas in the lab include computational
identification of disease biomarkers from high-throughput omics data
and machine learning- based inference of gene regulatory networks
(GRNs) from single-cell data. We currently have openings in two
projects from these areas: (1) biomarker discovery for post-traumatic
stress disorder (PTSD) from clinical and molecular data collected from
military populations, and (2) application of deep learning techniques
to rapidly and accurately infer GRNs from single-cell RNA-sequencing
data.

The successful candidate should be highly motivated and have some R
and/or Python programming experience. Prior research experience in
bioinformatics and/or computational biology is desirable. Details
about admission and degree requirements can be found at
http://www.memphis.edu/biology/graduate (Ph.D., Biological Sciences).
To ensure full consideration, applications should be completed by
February 1. Accepted students will be supported through a graduate
assistantship.

If interested, please first email Dr. Daigle ([email protected])
your CV and a concise statement describing your interest in the
position, previous research experience, and relevant coursework.

Subject: PhD Position, Statistical Analysis, Heriot-Watt Univ, Edinburgh

The Department of Actuarial Mathematics and Statistics at Heriot-Watt
University and the British Antarctic Survey invites applications for a
PhD position for the project \374Statistical Control of the Ecological
Risks of Fisheries\375 under the primary supervision of Abdul-Lateef
Haji-Ali from HWU and co-Supervision of Simeon Hill and Norman
Ratcliffe from BAS and in collaboration with Marine Scotland. The
successful applicant will be considered for funding for up to 3.5
years on EPSRC stipend level in addition to tuition fees. This PhD
project will use state-of-the-art statistical methods to analyse the
dynamics involved in fisheries and develop new tools for managing the
ecological and financial impacts of fishing. Fishing competes with
predators, such as birds and seals, for resources and might impact
their populations. The analysis of ecosystem dynamics will make use of
extensive data including remote sensed environmental variables and
time series of bird, mammal and fish population and performance
estimates. The results of this analysis will then be used in a
simulation framework to develop and test feedback methods for managing
the fisheries to control the risks to marine ecosystems while
maintaining economic benefits of fishing. In addition to working on
this project, the PhD candidate will be expected to enrol in several
PhD level courses in the Maxwell Institute during the first year of
the PhD.

For full consideration, please apply by December 31st 2020. The
starting date is in September 2021 or sooner.

For any further enquiries about the position, please contact
Abdul-Lateef Haji-Ali ([email protected]).
