Subject: New Book, Concise Guide to Numerical Algorithmics

Concise Guide to Numerical Algorithmics: The Foundations and Spirit of
Scientific Computing by John Lawrence Nazareth
SpringerBriefs in Computer Science Series
Springer, 2023/xiv+69 pgs./ISBN: 978-3031217616/Softcover & E-book/

When departments of computer science were first created within
universities worldwide during the middle of the 20th century,
numerical analysis was an important part of the curriculum. Its role
within the discipline of computer science has greatly diminished over
time, if not vanished altogether, and specialists in that area are now
to be found mainly within other fields, in particular, mathematics and
the physical sciences. A central concern of this monograph is the
regrettable, downward trajectory of numerical analysis within computer
science and how it can be arrested and suitably reconstituted, with
the aim of restoring numerical computation to its proper place within
the larger arena of computer science, and at what appears now to be an
opportune time. The book comprises six chapters, each with its own
bibliography. Chapters 2, 3, and 6 present the primary
content. Chapters 1, 4 and 5 are briefer, and they provide contextual
material for the three primary chapters and smooth the transition
between them. The chapter titles are as follows: 1. The Big Picture:
Mathematics, Science, and Engineering. 2. Number: The Language of
Science. 3. Algorithmics: The Spirit of Computing. 4. A Taxonomy of
Numerical Problems. 5. Numerical Analysis: Algorithm Under the Rubric
of Number. 6. Numerical Algorithmics: Number Under the Rubric of
Algorithm. An overview of the book, its front matter (Preface and
detailed TOC), and an abstract of each chapter along with its
bibliography can be found at:
https://link.springer.com/book/10.1007/978-3-031-21762-3 The book can
also be rented inexpensively from Amazon and read on a Kindle (or
other devices via the free Kindle app).

Subject: NA G-ROMs Seminar Series, ONLINE, Starting Jan 2023

We are delighted to announce the "Numerical Analysis of Galerkin ROMs
(NA G-ROMs)" online seminar series. The series will start on January
31, 2023 on a weekly basis. Seminars will take place on Tuesday at
4:00pm CET, 10:00 am EST, 07:00 am PST, on zoom.

The main purpose of the NA G-ROMs seminar series is to serve as a
forum for the Galerkin and Petrov-Galerkin reduced order model
community to exchange their views on both the achievements and the
"nagging" open problems in the numerical analysis of G-ROMs, e.g.,
proper orthogonal decomposition (POD), reduced basis method (RBM), and
related techniques. The NA G-ROMs seminar series aims at fostering
the exchange of ideas among the G-ROM community members who are
genuinely interested in the development of the mathematical
foundations of G-ROMs and, in particular, bringing the G-ROM numerical
analysis to a level comparable to that of classical numerical methods,
e.g., the finite element method.

The series webpage is https://na-g-roms.github.io/index.html

In order to receive the zoom link to the seminar room, please
subscribe to our mailing list by sending an email to
[email protected] Within a couple of minutes, you
will receive an automatic email that will instruct you to reply to
confirm your membership. Such confirmation is required to receive
weekly announcements. Weekly zoom links will not be posted publicly
on the website.

Please disseminate this info to collaborators and students who may be
interested.

Subject: ADIA Lab Seminar, HYBRID, Feb 2023

You are cordially invited to the upcoming seminar Where Does Money
Come From? by Professor Alex Lipton, Advisory Board Member of ADIA
Lab, hosted by ADGM Academy. The talk forms part of the ADIA Lab
Seminar Series aims to explore the latest trends and technologies in
Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and
High-Performance Computing across all major fields of study.

SEMINAR OVERVIEW: First, we start this talk with a quick exposition of
the modern monetary circuit theory (MMCT). Then, we analyze money
creation by the banking system as a whole and by individual banks and
highlight the central banks' role as the glue that keeps the financial
system together. Additionally, we look at the organization of the
international monetary system as a whole, emphasizing foreign
exchange. Second, we discuss some of the pain points and frictions of
the monetary system and argue that distributed ledger technology (DLT)
can remove some of these frictions. Third, we describe some of the
most recent developments in this field. Specifically, we review
central bank digital currencies (CBDCs), stable coins (SCs), and
digital trade coins (DTCs) and their potential applications. We also
address the emerging field of DeFi (Decentralized Finance), including
Automated Market Makers (AMM). Fourth, we show how AMMs can
reorganize forex trading and market- making by proposing a
cross-settlement mechanism for digital assets on interoperable
blockchains capable of handling CBDCs, SCs, and DTCs. By construction,
this mechanism generates fair exchange rates for on-chain assets,
which are consistent with traditional off-chain markets. Finally, we
illustrate the efficacy of our approach on realized FX rates for G-10
currencies. In the talk, we explain the mathematics, economics, and
technology behind these developments and elaborate on their pros and cons.

Subject: Matrix Functions and Exponential Integrators, Germany, Sep 2023

We (Kathryn Lund, Marcel Schweitzer and Stephane Gaudreault) are
organizing a workshop entitled "The f(A)bulous workshop on matrix
functions and exponential integrators" at the Max Planck Institute in
Magdeburg, Germany. The workshop will take place September 25-27,
2023. A link to a preliminary website can be found here:
https://indico3.mpi-magdeburg.mpg.de/event/30/

We envision the following goals for this workshop:
- Bringing together experts from both matrix function computations (in
particular the approximation of f(A)b) and exponential integrators
to stimulate a "joining of forces" that will lead to exciting new
developments and faster progress in both fields, as there are many
overlapping interests, and researchers in both areas can surely
benefit from an exchange of ideas.
- Establishing benchmark standards and a designing an (open access)
collection of challenging matrix function model problems from
various applications (including, but not limited to, exponential
integrators, lattice QCD, fractional differential equations, network
science, and general functions f) that can be used for comparing
both established and newly developed algorithms in a more rigorous
manner, thus fostering reproducibility and the fair comparison of
results in our fields.

In addition to the usual scientific talks, we also plan to host
several moderated discussion sessions as well as contributed talks for
early career researchers.

Please submit your abstracts/proposals at to the attention of the
Programme Committee before the February 19, 2023.

Subject: Postdoc Position, Plasma Physics, Inst of Mathematics, EPFL

A Postdoc position is available in the Institute of Mathematics at
EPFL in Lausanne, Switzerland, under the joint supervision of Annalisa
Buffa, Marco Picasso and Paolo Ricci.

The project is part of a wide European effort to address one of the
most pressing issues that the fusion community is facing, which is the
simulation of the turbulent dynamics in the boundary region of fusion
devices. State-of-the-art massively-parallel simulation codes based on
a set of three-dimensional fluid equations have been developed in the
past decade to simulate the boundary region. As of today, their
reliability for the prediction of ITER and future fusion reactors is
challenged by the lack of proper error controls. The goal of the
proposed project is to introduce error control (via suitable
a-posteriori indicators and efficient error control strategies) in the
simulation of plasma boundary turbulence, with an initial focus on the
finite difference techniques implemented in the in-house developed GBS
code (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jcp.2022.111294). Moreover, other
discretisation techniques will be considered at a later stage.

The ideal candidate is expected to have a good knowledge of numerical
methods for PDEs, both theory and implementation, as well as an
interest in understanding the multi-physics and multi-scale nature of
plasma turbulent dynamics.

The position is meant for two years, starting in early 2023, with the
possibility of being extended. EPFL offers very competitive
conditions. The application of young women and minority scientists is
highly encouraged.

qualification is however a sincere interest in learning new concepts
and skills.

You will be working on an applied problem from tribology in close
cooperation with colleagues from engineering. The mathematical concept
of homogenization has to be adapted to the tribological problem. The
main task will be the development, implementation and validation of an
efficient numerical method for the optimal design of journal bearing
systems with rough, textured surfaces.

With great pleasure we invite you to submit a paper for the special
issue of the Journal of Complexity "Space-Time Adaptive Numerical
Schemes for Parabolic Partial Differential Equations".

The purpose of this special issue is to report and review recent
developments in the area of adaptive space-time methods for parabolic
PDEs. Papers devoted to the complexity and optimality of algorithms
are very much appreciated, as well as manuscripts covering the
theoretical foundations of adaptive space-time schemes. Numerical
experiments confining the theoretical findings are highly valued,
however, purely computational studies are out of the scope of the
issue.

Further details, including the submission process, can be found on the
website

As we all know, the role and consequences of the notion of symmetry in
mathematics and related sciences are very important. On many
occasions, symmetries have appeared in mathematical formulations that
have become essential for solving problems or delving further into

results and applications in the fields of functional analysis and
fractional operators, in which the concept of symmetry plays an
essential role. Among others, papers on these topics are welcome.
