In this book a survey is given on the state of the art in theory and
the numerical solution of general linear quadratic optimal control problems
with differential algebraic equation constraints. This field is very active
in the last ten years and in particular the step from standard ordinary
differential equation constraints to differential algebraic equation
constraints has received a lot of interest. Although the theory for the
standard case is known since the sixties the development of numerical methods
is not complete. For the descriptor case this is even more the case.
Here not even the development of the theory can be considered near to complete.
On the other hand these problems occur in many applications, in particular in
engineering and it is therefore important to have a solid mathematical theory
as well as reliable numerical algorithms.
For this reason we review and extend theory and numerical methods for these
problems together and we hope that this book helps increase
the cooperation between pure mathematicians, numerical analysts and practioners.

in the directory "cs-archive". The file "README" gives
you more information about how to download tech reports.
The file "Index" gives a list of the tech reports currently
available. Not all our tech reports are available via ftp
at this moment, but it is our intention to make all future
reports available.

Reports are generally stored as compressed version of
.dvi or .ps files, and should be downloaded using the
"binary" option of ftp. Once downloaded, you will
probably have to use "uncompress".

Appalachian Numerical Analysis Day
April 4, 1992

An informal get-together of numerical analysts and computational
scientists in the Appalachian region is planned for the above date at
Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, Virginia. The day will be organized as
follows. We will convene at 8:30 A.M., at which time all will
introduce themselves. Talks will take place from 9:00-12:00 and
from 1:30-5:00. Anyone wishing to give a talk will put their name
into a hat; then, names will be drawn to determine the order of the
talks. The length of the talks will be determined by the number of
persons volunteering to talk. The time from 12:00-1:30 will be
devoted to lunch.

A block of rooms has been reserved (for participants in this event)
at the Best Western Red Lion Inn of Blacksburg (703-552-7770) for
the night of Friday, April 3; the rate is $45.00 per night per room (up
to four people). These rooms will be held until March 21; please
refer to Virginia Tech Center for Applied Math. when making
reservations. This motel is within 5 minutes of the Virginia Tech
campus. Rooms are also reserved for the night of Saturday, April 4
for those who wish to drive back home on Sunday. Other
accommodations, both more and less luxurious (Comfort Inn, Econo
Lodge, Hampton Inn, Ho-Jo Inn, Holiday Inn, Marriott, Super-8), also
exist within a few minutes of the campus.
