Installing SkyCat V.2.6.5 (version for HP-UX-B 11.00)

Installing SkyCat V.2.6.1 (version for HP-UX-B 10.20)

1. Retrieve and Install SkyCat V.2.6.5 . (SkyCat version supported for HP-UX-B 11.00).
2. Retrieve and Install SkyCat V.2.6.1 . (SkyCat version supported for HP-UX-B 10.20).

 

Installing FIMS V.2.35

1. Change directory to where you want to install the FIMS system. (e.g. cd /usr/local/packages)

1. Retrieve the FIMS V.2.35 delivery package from USG anonymous ftp.

 
2. At this point you should have a gzipped tar file in your current directory. Execute:

 

gunzip -c fims-V.2.35.tar.gz | tar xovf -

This will create a directory called fims.
 

3. At this point you may remove the gzipped tar file. rm fims-V.2.35.tar.gz

4. Adapt Perl path for Perl-script

 which perl

and include the result string (this is on most systems /usr/bin/perl or /usr/local/bin/perl ) in the first line of both Perl scripts
fims/src/gerber2ps.perl
and
fims/src/gerber2eps.perl

(e.g. #!/usr/bin/perl )

The script language Perl is not mandatory for FIMS. The two scripts are only to create postscript files from a MXU setup of FORS2.
 

5. For installation with USER-privileges only (This applies to all users who want to install FIMS only locally on their own machine and who do not have system manager privileges)

Execute the command sequence:

cd fims
setenv FIMSROOT $PWD
cd src

• Only when using Tcl7.6 or older Tcl versions:

start conversion script
new2old

and install modified source files via
make -f old.makefile
 

• Only when using Tcl8.0.5 or newer Tcl versions:

make
 

To avoid having to reset the environment variables every time you login, you could, for example, include the following two lines permanently in your .cshrc or .tcshrc file:

setenv FIMSROOT $HOME/fims #(if you unwrapped the FIMS package in $HOME)
setenv PATH ${PATH}:$FIMSROOT/bin
 

6. For installation with ROOT-privileges only

Execute the command sequence:

cd fims
setenv FIMSROOT $PWD
cd src
 

• make p (if using Tcl8.0.5 or newer)
• new2old; make -f old.makefile p (if using Tcl7.6 or older)
# copy Tcl plugins
make a # compile AutoPos C++ sources
make d # copy FORS database

Edit $FIMSROOT/src/fims.sh to adapt it to your local site:

• If FIMS is used on a single workstation replace local_site_host_name by the value of your $HOST variable.
• If FIMS is used in a LAN (more than one host), edit the FIMSROOT variable in the the default case *) according to your local site preferences.
When you are done with editing fims.sh :

make s # copy start script to fims/bin

Make FIMS accessable to all USER:

cd /usr/local/bin
ln -s $FIMSROOT/bin/fims.sh fims.sh
 

7. For installation on hosts with VLTSW only

The VLT-Makefile can be used alternatively to install fims as an ordinary VLTSW-module:

make -f Makefile all
 

Environment variables for FIMS-V.2.35

• FIMSROOT (defaults to $HOME/fims)

must point to the package directory. The variable can be overwritten by the setenv FIMSROOT command.
• INS_ROOT (default is $HOME)

This is the root directory for all FIMS output
• INS_USER (default is .fims)

This is the project (user)-related subdirectory
• LOG_DIR (default is $INS_ROOT/$INS_USER/LOG)

The directory where FIMS writes the log-file and the control file for automatic positioning
• SET_DIR (default is $INS_ROOT/$INS_USER/SET)

The directory where FIMS writes the acquisition files. This path variable can be redefined during a fims session [SetUpDir].
• PREP_DIR (default is $INS_ROOT/$INS_USER/PREP)

The initial directory to select FITS files to be loaded by SkyCat. The initial directory to select local cataloges be loaded by SkyCat.

Additionally  you should set SKYCAT_VER environment locally to the skycat version needed by FIMS
For example use the following:
      setenv SKYCAT_VER 2.6.1 for HP-UX-B 10.20

By default this value is set to 2.6.5 (HP-UX-B 11.00) inside the code.
 

Running FIMS V.2.35

• instrument number is one digit [0-2] and controls the menu bar.

1: only [FORS1] menu button (for FORS1 observers)
2: only [FORS2] menu button (for FORS2 observers)
• skycat option is a list of SkyCat command line options embedded in a pair of "-characters
• DEBUG is an optional flag to print all environmant variables of fims.sh This flag is only suitable in case of installation errors.

fims.sh
Start FIMS without options. Equivalent to fims.sh 2
 
 
• fims.sh 2 "-float_panel 1 -file /home/smith/.fims/PREP/test.fits -cat /home/smith/.fims/PREP/objects.ptl" DEBUG

Starts FIMS for FORS2 and specify the command line options for SkyCat. (Here SkyCat loads a fits image and a target catalog). Don't forget to use the double quotes. Additionally all environment variables are shown.

Verification of FIMS V.2.35



Verify the SkyCat version: Press [Help] [About SkyCat]. SkyCat version
number must be 2.6.5 (for HP-UX 11.00)


Verify the FIMS version: Press [Help] [About FIMS]. FIMS Version
number must be cmm 2.35


If not done so far, load a FITS image with World Coordinates, e.g. with
[Data-Servers]
[Image Servers] [DSS] and a image size of 7 arcmin.


Press [FORS2] [Enter Mode] [MOS] to create the FORS mask for MultiObjectSpectroscopy.

If there appears the message

skycat: error while autoloading "fors::FORS::FORSInit": wrong #
args: should be "namespace name ?-local? ?-enforced val? ?--? ?commands?"

try

new2old; make -f old.makefile p

( See section 6 of this manual) and start FIMS again.

The output in the run-time window should be similar to
